Mike Moeller ~ Mahtomedi High School

As an instrumental music educator, Michael Moeller has the privilege of teaching students at Mahtomedi High School in Mahtomedi, Minnesota. At Mahtomedi, Michael teaches two concert bands, three jazz ensembles, the Zephyr Pep Band, and weekly individual and small group lessons. Additional responsibilities include teaching guitar class, class piano and AP Music Theory.

Michael is active throughout Minnesota as an adjudicator, clinician, and low brass performer. Michael holds degrees from Wartburg College and the University of St. Thomas.

Paul Gronert ~ Chippewa Middle School, Mounds View

 

Paul Gronert teaches at Chippewa Middle School in the Mounds View School District, where he directs sixth, seventh and eighth grades, jazz band. He holds a Bachelor's degree in music education and another in music performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. and a Masters' degree in Music Performance from Michigan State University.

Paul has served as an MBDA Honor Band section coach and judge several times. He is a member of MMEA and MBDA. Paul is an active performer on saxophone and lives in Shoreview, MN with his wife and three daughters.

Nora Tycast ~ Spring Lake Park High School

Nora Tycast is in her 16th year of teaching and her 10th year of teaching at Spring Lake Park High School. Nora received her Music Education degree from  the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her Master’s Degree in Educational Policy and Administration from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Prior to teaching at SLPHS, Nora taught  in the Hopkins School district, and opened a new arts-and-technology high school in Miami, Florida. She has presented at both the MBDA Summer Symposium and MMEA  Annual Conference.  As a literacy coach and equity team member she has found that concentration on literacy and 21st century skills has helped to develop a strong, musically sound, and academically relevant ensemble classroom.

Keith Koehlmoos ~ Prior Lake High School


Keith Koehlmoos is in his seventeenth year of teaching bands at Prior Lake High School in Savage, MN.  He taught three years before that in South O'brien High School in Paullina, IA.  Bands under his direction have performed in London, Paris, Prague, Vienna, San Francisco, Hawaii, Spain, Italy and China.  Keith holds an M.A. in Music Ed. from the University of St. Thomas and a B.Mus in Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa.   Keith has been named the Prior Lake High School Teacher of the Year and twice named Outstanding Advisor of the Year.  His current professional organizations iclude the Minnesota Music Educators Association, MBDA and Education Minnesota.

Erica Bierman Adrian High School

Erika Bierman is currently Director of Bands and High School Choir at Adrian High School and Middle School. In addition to serving on the SW Region MBDA board, she is the current President-Elect for MBDA.  She has previously taught Music and Band at Round Lake Brewster High School, Nerstrand Elementary, and McLeod West Public Schools. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Concordia College-Moorhead and studied Contra-Alto, Bass, and B-flat Clarinet. Erika also worked with the 77 Lancers Marching Band as woodwind instructor for 4 summer seasons. Erika and her husband have one daughter and a yellow lab, Cadence.

Bryan Johnson, ~ Braham

Bryan Johnson is currently the Band Director at Braham Area School where he has taught for the past 8 years. His teaching responsibilities include some K-7 classroom music, 5-12 bands, lessons, jazz and pep bands, and the school Musical. Prior to working in Braham, he worked for two years in the Verndale school district.

Bryan received his Music Education degree with a minor in Jazz Studies from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 2001. He also received his Master's degree from Saint Mary's University (Winona, MN) in 2010 His primary instrument is trombone.

Bryan currently resides in Mora, MN.

Phillip Richardson Moundsview High

Phillip Richardson began teaching band at Mounds View High School in 1990. He directs all concert, jazz and pep bands. During his tenure at Mounds View, Mr. Richardson has held several leadership positions within the district and the school. He currently serves as the Fine Arts representative on the Building Operations Committee. Under Mr. Richardson's direction, the Mounds View bands have performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

Mr. Richardson holds a Bachelors of Music in Education from the University of Central Missouri and a Masters of Music in Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Prior to teaching at Mounds View, he taught high school, middle school and elementary band at Westran Public School in Missouri for six years. 

Mr. Richardson currently performs with the Minnesota Symphonic Winds and is an active tubist and clinican throughout the Twin Cities metro area. He is a member of Education Minnesota, MMEA/NAfME and MBDA.

John Bina Saint Thomas Academy

John Bina has taught in the public schools of Wisconsin and Minnesota since 1985.  He teaches at Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights where he is responsible for the middle and high school band, jazz ensemble and marching band.  He is the conductor of the VISTA Concert Band a unique collaborative music program between Saint Thomas Academy and Visitation School.

John received his B.M. in instrumental music education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his M.M. from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2000.  He holds memberships in MAfME, MMEA and MBDA.  Outside of school he enjoys running marathons, travel and time with his family at the cabin.

Nickole Bowie- Martin County West Schools

Nickole Bowie is currently Director of Bands at Martin County West Schools following four years of teaching in Colorado and two years of teaching in Oklahoma. Bowies responsibilities include 5th Grade Beginning band, 6th Grade Band, Junior High Band, High School Concert Band, two jazz ensembles, pep band, drum line, independent music courses and lessons. She also directs the Martin County West Jr./Sr. High Marching Band in the summer.

Originally from Sherburn MN, Bowie graduated from Southwest State University in Marshall, MN with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. She also earned a Masters in Technology in Education from Lesley University in Cambridge MA.

She continues to be involved in music outside of the school day as a clarinetist for the Minnesota River Valley Wind Ensemble and playing/conducting for her local Trimont Area Centennial Band. Nickole Bowie lives in Trimont, MN with her husband, Linh.

Keith Wander Picture

Keith Wander ~ Hawley

Keith Wander is the Director of Bands at Hawley High School.  He
has held that position for 30 years.  He received a Bachelor of Music Degree from Concordia College in Moorhead Minnesota in 1983 and A Master of Science in Music Education from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1995.  At Hawley he directs the Concert Band, 9th Grade Band, Jazz Band and Blues Band(Vocal and Instrumental group).  He also teaches music theory, theatre arts, directs the fall play, directs the one act play, and does stage direction, technical theatre, and pit orchestra for the Musical each year.  He is in his 6th year as Artistic Director of the Red River Boy Choir of Fargo, ND.

Dagan Hanson ~ Hidden Oaks Middle School, Prior Lake

Mr. Hanson, a graduate of Winston Churchill High School in Eugene, Oregon, earned his Bachelor of Music/Music Education degree from St. Olaf College in 1999, where he studied his primary instrument, oboe, with Professor Merilee Klempe.  In his twelfth year of teaching, Mr. Hanson is concluding a Master of Arts degree specializing in Music Education with a concentration in instrumental music at the University of St. Thomas.  Prior to teaching in Prior Lake-Savage, Mr. Hanson was director of bands at United South Central Middle School in Keister, MN, and drum-line instructor at United South Central High School in Wells, MN.
             At Hidden Oaks Middle School Mr. Hanson is primarily responsible for the 6-8th grade concert bands, the “Heatwave” 7-8 Jazz Band, the 7-8 Honor Band and small-group instrument lessons and chamber groups.  Additional teaching responsibilities include small group lessons and chamber groups at Twin Oaks Middle School.  Besides his work at Hidden Oaks Middle School, Mr. Hanson has instructed bands at Prior Lake High School and Five Hawks Elementary School during his tenure in the Prior Lake—Savage School District.  Professional affiliations include membership in the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), and the Minnesota Band Director’s Association (MBDA).

Tony is the Director of Bands at Kasson-Mantorville High School where he directs the Symphonic and Concert Bands. In addition, Tony teaches lessons and leads the The KoMet Pep Band which consists of all the students in the high school band program.
Tony graduated from Moorhead High School in Moorhead, MN and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music Education. While at Concordia, Tony played tuba in the Concordia College Band, Concordia Orchestra, and the Concordia Cobber Band.

Peter Gepson ~ 6-8 Honor Band Audition Co-Chair ~ Glencoe-Silver Lake

Peter Gepson has been the 7-12 Director of Bands for the Glencoe-Silver Lake Public Schools since 2011 where he leads four Concert Bands and two Jazz Bands.  He has served as a section coach on all brass instruments at MBDA Regional and State Honor Bands as well as frequently adjudicating MSHSL Solo/Ensemble and Large Group Contests.  Before serving at Glencoe-Silver Lake he previously taught band for the Minnesota public school districts of Virginia, Triton (Dodge Center), and Albert Lea.  He holds degrees from Northwestern College of Iowa, and both the Omaha and Lincoln campuses of the University of Nebraska.

Lauren currently teaches 6-8 Band at Salk Middle School in Elk River, MN. She has previously taught 6-12 Bands and Elementary Music in Springfield, MN. Lauren earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Concordia College, where she studied flute as her primary instrument. Lauren acts as the MBDA Honor Band Event Coordinator. She has served as section coach for several MBDA honor bands at both the local and state levels. Lauren is also an active member of MMEA; she presented at the 2015 MMEA Conference with colleague Karinda Rolando.

Terri Svec ~ Buffalo

Terri Svec received a Bachelor of Music Education from East Carolina University and a Master of Science in Music Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She taught beginning and middle level band in the Chicago suburbs for five years prior to her current position at Buffalo Community Middle School. Her duties over the past 16 years have included band, choir, orchestra, classroom music, guitar and music technology. She has also been department chair and served on several district music committees and has been involved in piloting new music technologies in her shool. She is a member of MMEA/MENC and ASBDA in addition to MBDAand has served as Secretary and Treasurer for MBDA. She continues to perform on oboe with the Plymouth Concert Band and with small chamber groups throughout the west Metro area.

Sandra Riehl

Sandra is a Technology Integrationist in the Shakopee School system in combination with owning and running a web design business.  She has been merging her interests with technology and teaching for over 20 years. 

Becker Ms  Caroline-1

Caroline Becker completed her undergraduate work in trumpet performance and music education at the University of Saint Thomas. She currently teaches K-6 music, junior high band, and the high school Concert Band at Saint Agnes School in Saint Paul. Under her direction, an instrumental music program was implemented in 2008 and has since grown to over 75 members in grades 7-12. The Concert Band had their first MSHSL large ensemble performance in 2011, their first pep band performance in 2010, and the junior high band attends the Middle Level MMEA festivals each year. Caroline is a member of MMEA, MENC, MBDA, and has been an active alumnus of Saint Thomas, working with some of their undergraduate music education students. In addition to teaching, Caroline coaches grade school volleyball, basketball and softball, and outside of school she enjoys running, biking, playing sports, and reading Jane Austen novels.coming soon!
