JOB TITLE: Wind Orchestra Conductor  
LOCATION: Twin Cities Metro

COMPENSATION: DOE, includes weekly rehearsals, preparation time, and concerts
Job Summary: This position is responsible for the conducting, education and overall artistic
development of the Wind Orchestra, a new orchestra program of the Minnesota Youth
Symphonies beginning in our 2018-2019 season and meeting Saturday mornings from 8:45-11
am at Highland Junior High School in Saint Paul.
The WIND ORCHESTRA will be the first orchestra experience for younger winds, brass and
percussion players. The primary focus will be to introduce the concept of orchestral playing for
these young musicians. Students will be introduced to orchestral repertoire as well as
repertoire that features winds, brass and percussion instruments.
Students will work with standard beat patterns and unusual meters. Subdivision will be
introduced as well. Exercises that include ritardandi, accelerandi, and fermate should be part
of the Winds experience. Sectionals are used to work on specific techniques as demanded by
the music.
• Conduct Wind Orchestra during Saturday rehearsals
• Participate in auditions as part of audition panel
• Recruit students for ensemble from surrounding school districts
• Select literature for the ensemble
• Plan rehearsals, including selecting literature for sight-reading, sectionals and special events
such as side-by- side rehearsals
• Prepare students for performance opportunities throughout the year


• BA or BS in Music Education
• Conducting experience—preferably with elementary and middle school students
• Teaching experience in a winds, brass, and/or percussion instrument
• Strong classroom management skills
• Lesson and rehearsal planning skills
• Strong interpersonal communication skills including the ability to work closely with families
• Able to work collaboratively as part of a small artistic team
• Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office
• Able to pass a criminal background check
• Able to behave in a professional, respectful and appropriate manner as outlined in MYS
